Hi, I'm Dr. Caron Leid. Twenty-six years ago, my mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease at just 57 years old. Like so many families, our lives changed in an instant. We received a diagnosis. We were given information about Alzheimer's disease. What nobody taught us was how to navigate the journey that followed.
No one prepared us for the changing family dynamics, the difficult decisions, the guilt, the grief, the burnout, or the realities of living with a progressive neurological disease. We learned by living it.
I truly believed that twenty-six years later, things would be different. Yet after more than two decades as a researcher, educator, counsellor, and caregiver advocate, I continue to hear families say the very same thing: Nobody told me this.
That's why I created FORUS™, which stands for For Our Unseen Struggles. FORUS™ is a trauma-informed caregiver education pathway built from the inside out. Rather than simply teaching you about dementia, it teaches you how to navigate the journey of living with it.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dementia. There shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all approach to caregiver education. My hope is that when you complete FORUS™, you won't simply understand dementia. You'll understand how to navigate the journey with greater confidence, greater compassion, and the reassurance that you don't have to do it alone.
Welcome to FORUS™.
